An interview with DJ Fresh Fruit

Welcome to Amsterdam Vinyl Club! Where did your DJ name come from?
I’m from the Lowlands and my real name is Peer – a Dutch word that translates as ‘pear’ in English. So ‘fruit’ made sense, and I hope my music is fresh!

What sort of music do you like to play?
I play a mix of soul, funk, Latin grooves and some Brazilian vibes - so I’m amongst friends playing here at Amsterdam Vinyl Club!

Where did your love of music begin?
My stepfather was a musician and I grew up in a house full of music. When I first started buying records I was into old school Prince and lots of reggae and dance music.

Also, growing up I had a group of friends and we loved playing vinyl records and making our own sound systems.

After that, many years passed. But the arrival of Coronavirus brought me back to my records, and that’s when I started throwing parties at my own house – sneaky Corona parties! But as I found the time to get back into DJing, something good came out of the pandemic.

You always play 7” singles. Is there a reason for this?
The 7” format is great! The records are small and fit in my bag, so I can take them on the train. And it does make finding the right track a little bit easier – especially after a beer or two!
