An interview with DJ Ermac

Where did you get your DJ name from?
I chose the name because, when I was younger, I used to play the Mortal Kombat video games a lot. Ermac was my favourite character, so my friends used to call me Ermac and it stuck!

What are you going to play for us tonight?
I’ve been a rave DJ for a long time, so I love fast Hard Trance music – but this evening I thought I’d do something a little different and play some deep techno and dub techno. Nothing too hard for an intimate venue like this – more ambient and good for a small crowd.

There are lots of great DJs playing funky records this evening and blending all different kinds of music. So I hope my choices bring something a little different to the mix.

So you’ve been a DJ for a while?
I’ve been a DJ for 25 years. I have a huge collection of vinyl which is split between Barcelona and Amsterdam, and over the years I’ve played in many clubs and at lots of small parties.

I used to play a lot of private parties in the past, but now I’m trying to pick things up a little – especially with events coming up like ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event), where I’m going to play a few dates.

How did you get started in DJing?
I’m from Barcelona, and around 2000 I was part of a collective of DJs – people who were just starting out and were looking for great records to play. At that time we were playing a lot of Makina – Techno Catalan electronic dance music. We used to play at lots of parties and we always came with big crates of vinyl!

Do you find any difference when DJing in different parts of Europe?
Coming from the south of Europe, I’m used to clubs being louder – that’s quite normal in Spain, especially with the music scene in Ibiza where there’s a lot of house and techno. It’s the same in Barcelona where you have a tradition of combining lots of different styles of music together. Our approach is normally just to pump up the volume and give people what they need for a party! While venues are a little quieter in other parts of Europe, in Spain we like to turn up the volume and go for it! But there are plenty of loud clubs in Amsterdam and Rotterdam if that’s what you want to hear.

We have our first female DJ tonight here at Amsterdam Vinyl Club. Has it always been hard to find female DJs?
In Barcelona our DJ collective was most active from 2003 to 2005, and at that time there were not a lot of female DJs. But things are getting more equal now, and I actually work with a female DJ here in Amsterdam, DJ Josefin.

We hope you don’t mind us mentioning this, but you’re extraordinarily tall…
Yes! It’s not typical in Spain, but being tall runs in my family. But even though I’m a similar height to many Dutch men, I still have trouble finding trousers that are long enough!
