An interview with DJ Boudewijn

Why did you choose your DJ name?
My first name is Boudewijn, and Baldwin is the English translation – so DJ Baldwin seemed to make sense!

What made you want to become a DJ?
I became a DJ because I’m a music lover. I primarily play alternative electronic music like IDM, trip-hop, ambient, breakbeat, jungle and electro. But my tastes are eclectic and I also have various other styles in my vinyl collection – indie rock, instrumental, hip-hop, jazz, singer-songwriter and also more popular music.

As a record collector I always buy the best records on vinyl, and I collect all formats – singles and albums. That got me thinking that I should consider DJing. As vinyl has become so much more popular these days, it seemed like a good time to share my collection with other people.

Has music always been important to you?
Music was a big part of my childhood and I have my parents to thank for that. They originally met as part of a choir, so there was always music in our home. I was raised with music and around music, and I was exposed to everything – from classical music to the old rock’n’roll my mother loves. From a young age I was exposed to all sorts of influences, not just the pop music I'd hear on the radio.

Is there any music from the Netherlands in your set?
The music I like to play is pretty international. I like some Dutch music, but what I play comes from all over the world. So there won’t be any of the sort of music you’d hear on the streets on King’s Day!
