An interview with iilljj
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name's Dima. I’m a producer, composer and DJ, and one of the founding members of the electronic group Space Ego.
What music do you play as a DJ?
I love experimenting with different sounds, and my DJ sets reflect that. I play a wide range of music, from tracks for the dance floor to hypnotic soundscapes, from jazz to ambient.
Are you a big record collector?
I started building my vinyl collection around the same time I began DJing, in the early 2000s.
At first, I collected records from various electronic labels, mainly house, minimal techno and deep techno. I remember the first record in my collection was the legendary Kraftwerk - 'Tour De France'.
Over the years, my musical tastes gradually evolved and so did my record collection. I became increasingly drawn to experimental music, IDM and ambient.
At the moment, my collection isn’t particularly large, but it’s carefully curated. I mainly collect releases from Rephlex records, as well as Soviet jazz, rock and avant-garde records. Of course, I’m always happy to add any great music that I can enjoy listening to at home.
Where do you get your records?
One of my favorite things to do while travelling is visit small underground record shops, and I almost always come back with a couple of records from each trip.
Do you collect music on other formats?
It wouldn’t be fair not to mention that I also collect rare cassette tapes, mostly underground, indie and experimental releases.
Have you released your own music?
In 2025, my friends and I from Space Ego released our own album 'Friendship Forever' on vinyl, which was a truly special and rewarding milestone for us.
Are you still making music?
I’m currently based in Amsterdam and have two solo music projects.
The first is dHET, an electronic live project focused on techno and house, where I perform using vintage analogue synthesisers.
The second is iilljj, under which I play vinyl and cassette DJ sets – including for AVC, whose approach to vinyl culture I really like.
