An interview with DJ Hatchobori
Where did your DJ name come from?
Hatchobori is a neighbourhood in Tokyo. When I was a teenager I worked part-time in Hatchobori for a family-run shop, and I was there for over 10 years. In the store I used to play my own mix tape – house music! My mix tape was popular with my friends and they called it the Hatchobori Mix – that’s how the name started. Hatchobori means a lot to me, so I took it for my DJ and store name.
In Japan we have a wide range of DJs – male, female, hip-hop, house, techno and so on. We have a lot of various and diverse DJs, and I felt very comfortable playing in the Tokyo scene.
So you now live in the Netherlands?
Yes, I now live in Amsterdam and I sell vinyl from Japan, specifically music by Japanese artists. So tonight I’m going to play some interesting Japanese sounds from my store – tracks that I really love and want to share with audiences.
What do you have in store for us this evening?
I’m going to play a little bit of everything – jazz, city pop, Japanese rap and so on. But I’ll also play a little traditional Japanese music to mix it up a bit. I always like to make my DJ sets a little bit unique and different!
