An interview with DJ Fresh
Where does your DJ name come from?
The name actually comes from the fact that I shower too long! My mother always used to shout at me for staying in the shower for too long, and that’s where DJ Fresh came from.
Where did your love of music come from?
My father had a lot of records – James Brown and lots of funk. But I always took music really seriously, it was never a joke to me. As a kid I’d be playing records in my bedroom with friends, learning a little each day about what it takes to be a DJ – scratching, mixing and everything else.
Have you been DJing for a long time?
I’ve been DJing since 1991. I do a lot of live streams on the internet, and that’s great because I also get lots of followers on Instagram, Facebook and X. I also have stuff on SoundCloud and Mixcould, so my name is out there.
What sort of stuff of you like to play?
I think my main influence is DJ Jazzy Jeff from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but my sound is more eclectic. I like to play lots of different styles.
What sorts of places do you DJ?
I play some festivals, but I play more in clubs. In Amsterdam I play in places like Escape, which is in the centre of town, near Rembrandtplein. Some nights there are around 500 to 600 people in Escape, sometimes more – it’s a very big club, one of the biggest in Amsterdam.
What drives you to be a DJ?
A lot of people ask me about DJing, and they ask if I do it for the money. But money is only second place. I do it for the love of music, and I love sharing my records with people. If I was only doing it for the money, I think I’d get bored quickly.
